Five Things I’ve Learned This Week – 06/13/13

Five Things I’ve Learned This Week or Was Reminded Of:

1) Just because someone doesn’t believe what you say, doesn’t mean you didn’t speak the truth. They may not be ready to hear it.  Be patient. There was once something(s) we didn’t believe were true, but in fact were and now we can recognize it.

2) Sometimes God shows up in ways we would not have expected. I hope our theology is flexible enough to allow God to reveal new things to us. Pastoral teaching is great unless it limits our ability to see God in how He is speaking to us personally.

3) Enjoying people and needing people are two totally different concepts. It’s ok to need folks in our lives but not to be needy of them.  If that difference is blurry to you, it might help to talk it out with a friend or a counselor. Many people confuse the two and it creates all types of relationship problems.

4) Want to know what is in someone’s heart? Watch what they do without thinking. Do they automatically lend a hand or always have to be asked to help out? Do they automatically compliment or does a snarky remark fly out of their mouth without thinking? Automatic actions illustrate what resides in the heart of people.

5) A small group of trusted companions is of greater value than a crowd of people who don’t authentically care. Let’s not get caught up in the number of friends, but rather the depth of the connections.

Five Things I’ve Learned This Week or Was Reminded Of:

1) There are some things that happen in life that don’t make sense and can make us question whether God is involved in the daily lives of people. I believe He is and I also have a lot of patience for folks who hear of children being killed by a tornado, while at school, and they wonder if God’s protection is everywhere.  I hope Christians are gracious when people wonder out loud after such a tragedy; it’s normal to wrestle with our faith.

2) I really love my two furry dog children, Harley and Gracie. Anyone who has adored their animals understands what I mean when I call them my furry children.

3) Getting out of our comfort zone is AWESOME! Go do something that you are not too sure about but always wanted to try. Trust me, it’s worth it.

4) I love Spring and seeing flowers in my front yard. All the colors make me happy.

5) You can’t miss someone if you are constantly together. Missing someone is an important emotion not to be overlooked in a relationship.

Five Things I’ve Learned This Week or Was Reminded Of:

1) Anxiety isn’t a sign of a weak mind but rather the nervous system expelling extra stress that wasn’t worked off in the gym or through talking it out. Stress is like a balloon filling with air. The air has to come out or the balloon will pop. The “pop” for humans is often anxiety.

2) Mental exhaustion is worse than physical exhaustion

3) God brings sweet reminders of His presence everyday and hopefully we are not rushing so much that we miss them

4) We should keep doing more of whatever makes us feel happy, relaxed and hopeful

5) Good friends always find their way back to each other, even if a little or a lot of time has passed

Five Things I’ve Learned This Week or Was Reminded Of:

1) Right after I was done hagging on multi-level marketing enterprises in my post Jesus Isn’t Amway, my friend starts selling anti-cellulite wraps; through a multi-level marketing opportunity. So I will now eat crow on this topic, but hopefully with less cellulite while I eat. But still, my point was not turning Christianity into a product

2) I should have bought Dunkin Donuts stock before a news article hit the media about their potential American-based growth. I better get that stock order in before it goes up. Procrastination and investing don’t mix; but if you’ve hung around here for any length of time, you will know I am a huge Dunkins fan so why not buy stock?

3) God is a God of second chances. Anyone who tells you otherwise, either in words or actions, is a liar. Get away from them quickly. There’s a snake in the grass

4) My identity isn’t tied to my church. It’s a place to grow, learn and serve but doesn’t give me purpose or define my destiny. That is God’s job only

5) A true friend will challenge you, your actions and the way you think. Let it happen; it’s a good thing

Five Things I’ve Learned This Week – 04/10/13

Five Things I’ve Learned This Week or Was Reminded Of:

1) Being a Christian doesn’t make us immune to mental illness, depression, anxiety, fear, trauma or any of the other struggles that are possibilities in this world

2) New solutions breed new problems. Example? Technology. It’s great until it doesn’t work the way we want it to

3) Texas weather is absurd and makes me crazy sometimes. Why would it be 37 degrees in April? That’s just unnatural. I have flip-flops that want to be worn

4) When a person acts in a way that is not normal for them, it is their subconscious jumping up and down, waving their hands saying “hey, over here!” We need to watch what people do and not just what they say. We could learn a  lot about how they are feeling

5) Single folks shouldn’t expect an instant connection on a first date. It would be like meeting a new friend and assuming you’re best friends right there on the spot. Human connections take time to grow and become enriching to our lives.  It doesn’t happen quickly (or at least it shouldn’t)
